ARTIST BIO

Leah Ying Lin (æž—ç‘›) is a New York–based multidisciplinary artist who creates living sculptural spectacles through metallic ceramics, metal, glass, creative coding, and performance art. Her practice centers on kinetic sculptures equipped with interactive breathing systems, projection-mapped videos, integrated sound components, and living plants that grow over time in dialogue with the sculptures. These works reveal unspoken narratives of planetary and interstellar colonization and alien ecological impact, mirroring both the colonial histories and environmental destruction of Earth, while emerging through new cosmic mythologies, alien ecologies, and immersive interactive environments.

Grounded in the future archaeology, Lin’s visual practice blends the language of futurism with the principles of classical East Asian art, exploring new definitions of sculpture and the ways in which art engages the viewer. Through investigations of planetary and interstellar colonization, her work examines humanity’s obsession with conquest—of territory, nature, and even itself—while subtly exploring displacement across cultures. Lin’s work has been exhibited in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Rome, and Kyoto, including Arsenal Contemporary Art, Alisan Fine Arts, MAAM Museum, and the Untitled Art Fair, to name a few.

Beyond the gallery, she has appeared in global high-fashion campaigns as the face of Balenciaga, Moncler, and Coach, and has been featured in Vogue and V Magazine—bridging visual art, performance, and fashion through a singular, evolving lens. Lin received her M.Arch from the Rhode Island School of Design, and further studied lighting design in Rome and ceramic sculpture in Kyoto. She is currently an artist-in-residence at the World Trade Center through Silver Art Projects until May 2026.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My artistic practice explores the intersections between humanity, technology, and the cosmos, investigating how our impulses toward conquest—of territory, nature, and even ourselves—resonate across ecological, cultural, and ethical dimensions. Visually, my work blends the language of futurism with the principles of classical East Asian art, drawing on strategies of Future Archaeology to imagine how present material culture might be interpreted across time and by future observers, human or non-human.

I create immersive and interactive sculptural environments that balance engineered and living elements—breathing systems, projection-mapped videos integrating telescope footage of celestial bodies with my own recorded sounds, scent, and plants that grow over time—inviting viewers to inhabit spaces where matter, time, and perception unfold in dynamic, unpredictable ways. These works carry traces of human intervention while highlighting the agency of non-human actors, exploring relationships between humans, the environment, and other forms of life.

Conceptually, my work engages with posthumanist thought and critiques anthropocentrism, while reflecting on the memory embedded in materials and the legacies of our ecological and technological choices. By examining planetary and interstellar narratives, I seek to expand the definition of sculpture, exploring new ways in which art can mediate perception, memory, and the ethical responsibilities of humans in a larger, interconnected cosmos.
