ABOUT THE ARTIST

Leah Ying Lin (æž—ç‘›) is an artist, art director and high fashion model based in New York. Lin obtained a Master of Architecture degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2019, she has participated as the lead interior designer for landmark projects such as Sphere Las Vegas. Meanwhile Lin also studied in Kyoto for ceramics sculpture, and studied in RISD Palazzo Cenci Rome for lighting design. Lin’s artworks have been exhibited globally in New York, Rome, Kyoto, Providence, and Los Angeles. Her works as an art director for independent short films and music videos have been nominated and awarded by various prestigious international film festivals. Owing to Lin’s multidisciplinary practice, she has a presence within the high-fashion circle, representing global campaigns as lead model/artist for Balenciaga, Fenty Beauty, Coach, Moncler. Lin has also being featured in Vogue Italia, Vogue HK, V Magazine, Rolling Stone Magazine, etc.

Lin’s artistic themes delve into the exploration of human desire for conquest and the fragility of life, machinery and nature, the tension between destruction and resurrection - the endless cycle of rebirth and destruction between the dynamics. Lin’s interest in the contrast between the transient and the eternal is evident in her fascination with the ephemeral nature of life and her investigation of cyclical and perpetual karma.

Lin’s interdisciplinary practice in architecture design, film production, and modeling has given her unique experiences and skill sets with various materials, technologies, scales, and performances. All those experiences influenced her mediums including kinetic sculpture, lighting installations, video art, and performance. She is deeply fascinated by creating an ambiguous coexisting state of death and rebirth in her works. In most of her pieces, microprocessor programing and 3D metal printing, integrating a conflict between tradition and innovation into both visual, conceptual and technical aspects. As a female Chinese diaspora artist in New York, Lin’s identity as a woman, as well as the challenges and opportunities brought about by the tumultuous political environment have evolved into an extremely contradictory yet inclusive and vibrant visual language in her works.

In her first solo exhibition in Latitude Gallery New York 2022 - Happy Living, Happy Life, Lin created a series of works that include kinetic sound sculpture, installations, short films, and performances art to create a surrealistic spectacle. In 2022-2023, Leah Ying Lin began to focus on a new series of futuristic kinetic sculpture, rooted in the realm of Surrealist Techno-Feminism that imagines the late stage of the world and explore the interplay between human bodies, machinery, and the processes of rebirth/ reconstruction. In 2024, Lin has created a series of brand new sculptures, installations, and collaborative performances, showcasing works of different scales and incorporating new programming and interactive technologies. Her new works are in planning to be exhibited in Arsenal Contemporary Art New York, and other locations in 2024-2025.
